AMSTERDAM
Hotel L’Europe - AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam’s oldest luxury hotel has been refurbished by local design practice Nicemakers. Hotel de L’Europe, at the heart of the city on the Amstel river, has both grandeur and intimacy, with furniture from Ben Whistler helping to bridge the gap between old and new.

In the lounge lobby, a 14-seater banquette, made by Ben Whistler, is a dramatic centrepiece. With scroll arms, a brushed brass trim and fluted-oak end details, it was made in six sections and, like all of the furniture, was installed while the hotel was closed during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The lobby also features a back-to-back banquette with bullion fringe trim at the base, and small ottomans set within existing pillared alcoves, which had to be carefully measured on site to ensure a precise fit.

Nicemakers also specified several designs from Ben Whister’s sister company, Chapel Street. These include Limoges dining chairs, upholstered in Arizona leather from Whistler Leather; Burnaby small armchairs (14 in total); Morton dining chairs for the brasserie; and a Cadogan sofa for the library, embellished with ruched trim.
