at Baur au Lac Zurich

Baur au Lac is one of Zurich’s destination five-star hotels, founded in 1844 and with an enviable location on the city’s Schanzengraben moat. Martin Brudnizki Design Studio (MBDS) was charged with creating a new restaurant and bar suite, Baur’s, with Ben Whistler supplying banquettes for both the restaurant and the smoking room.
MBDS’s scheme takes its design cues from classic European brasseries
Straddling traditional comfort and contemporary flair. In the restaurant, there are orange leather banquettes in a variety of different sizes and shapes, with deep buttoning on the headrest and ventilation grilles on the plinths, while the smoking room features green leather banquettes with contrast piping.
Prototypes were made to ensure they were millimetre perfect
The banquettes had to exactly correspond with the new joinery and existing walls. The Ben Whistler team visited the site to measure up; prototypes were made to ensure they were millimetre perfect, before the team returned to site for the installation.
