BARS & RESTAURANTS
The Red Room at The Connaught
London

Accessed through a velvet-curtained doorway from the Connaught’s champagne room, this ‘secret’ bar rewards those who find it with some world-class art as well as a lively design scheme by Bryan O’Sullivan Studio (BOS).

The interiors have very few straight lines
Rounded edges add to the sense of cosiness, and there are seventies influences at work, such as the bubble-glass legs made from poured crystal on the Ben Whistler bar stools, which are upholstered in Whistler Leather.
Ben Whistler made the banquette and small sofa, both of which have deeply undulating wavy backs.

Creating these intense curves took plenty of experimentation with fabrics and different densities of foam to ensure a smooth finish with no puckering or loose areas. Lots of prototyping and work on site was required to snugly fit the banquette into a relatively tight space, with no sacrifice to comfort.

A further sofa features a frame of repeating arches of solid walnut, connected by walnut balls, with a leather seat and upholstered back. Stools sit on matching walnut ball feet while chairs have characterful ‘dog feet’ legs like fat, splayed paws, adding character and an unexpectedness to traditional pieces.
